Some gigs become legends, a benchmark for “I was there” nostalgia. This photo by Lauren Garbutt captures such a moment during NXNE 2013 when the emerging Toronto band July Talk proved that their raucous live performances were more than just bluster. The band reached for a conceptual element by bringing a small bed onto the stage, foreshadowing the climactic moment during the show when a pillow fight erupted on stage, which resulted in blasts of white feathers being dumped onto the audience.

Stephen McGill captured the rowdy Ty Segall, a glimpse at the compulsive artist in his blistering surf-garage rock peak. His 2013 acoustic release, Sleeper, Segall demonstrated a soulful muted artistry, though equally disruptive, which oozed from his performance.

The likelihood of catching a repeat performance of the bombastic UK post-punk band Savages at the Horseshoe Tavern again are very slim. It’s moments like this that make Toronto a vibrant international music city, where breaking artists can perform to enthralled audiences in uniquely intimate settings.

In an interview with The Guardian in May 2013, Ezra Koenig defends Vampire Weekend, stating that “people with money, education, these things are complicated”. This photo by Jean LaBelle colourfully depicts the unshakeable decadence and elegance of the band.
