A packed crowd at Echo Beach enjoyed a day of chef-prepared eats, and great music as Toronto celebrated MattyFest yesterday (Sept. 7th).
Featuring a well-curated lineup featuring headliners Wu-Tang Clan, who are currently celebrating their 25th anniversary, punk icons Descendents, rapper Danny Brown, local punk heroes METZ, and more, the lineup was stacked, and definitely lived up to expectations.
Ever the salesmen, hip-hop legends Wu-Tang Clan began their set, not with music, but with trailers for their upcoming TV and film projects. But once the music began, the eight-member strong, NYC-based group had the crowd feeling it. Featuring an array of classic bangers (Protect Your Neck, Shimmy Shimmy Yeah, C.R.E.A.M, etc), sounded as tight as ever as they flowed seamlessly through some of hip-hop’s most beloved tracks.
West coast punk legends Descendants breezed through a fast-paced set that touched on everything from college, relationships, and adulthood.
Hip-hop artist Danny Brown reminded the crowd why he is the future of the game as he transcended genres and cemented himself as a strong candidate for one of the genre’s hottest stars with his signature storytelling-centric lyrics, unique sense of humour, and banging beats. And with his upcoming fifth studio album uknowhatimsayin¿, slated for release on October 4th via WARP, he’s just getting started.
With the well-crafted music and food lineups, here’s hoping that MattyFest becomes an annual tradition.
