Maybe we should skip the foreplay

By: Emma F. Jorgensen –

Skip the Foreplay’s newest album, NightLife (Epitaph Records) is a basic album filled with “fuck shit up”, “party with this alcohol” and “life is just a big adventure” songs.

The intro track, ST4P, showcases the band’s sound and is a prime way to find out that this is really all the kind of music you’re going to hear in the next 12 tracks.

The fact that they even had this intro intrigued me, as many bands do not create a way to introduce their new fans to their music.

The first few tracks on the album hold strong resemblances to Lamb of God, The Medic Droid, Parkway Drive, The Ghost Inside and undertones of sounds created by Aqua.

However unique and creative the music on this album is, it is extremely repetitive and gets old quite fast. I found myself skipping through the last few songs just cause it felt like I had already listened to them.

Track 10, This City, would have fit much better into the album if they placed it at the end. The vibe I felt was that the album was coming to an end and I was happy. But to go skip songs at the end and find that there were three more songs left, I just got aggravated.

Like most mainstream music today, the auto-tune was abused almost to the point of no return on this album. Nothing felt unique or different about the vocal work that really tickled my fancy.

Overall this album is rad to listen to at a live show or illegal teenage party, but it wouldn’t be my go to CD to really satisfy my ear drums with complicated, well written music.
