102.1 the Edge Announces Edgefest 2013 Line-Up, But Some Fans Aren’t Happy

By: Curtis Sindrey –

The announcement was made this morning on The Dean Blundell show, and Mumford and Sons will head–. No, that’s not right. The Lumineers, Mumford stand-ins, are headlining.

The festival, which will take place on July 31st at Downsview Park, took a folk-rock approach this year, which has been criticized by some fans due to the festival cultivating a reputation for booking primarily rock, and punk acts including Billy Talent  and Alexisonfire.

The mandate of any festival is to book bands that will sell tickets and not always who rocks the hardest. While some fans will disagree that a folk band like The Lumineers should be headlining a rock festival, when was the last time a summer music festival line-up made everyone happy?

Another notable exclusion is the electronic tent, which housed the likes of Morgan Page, JFK (of MSTRKRFT), Jay Fay, and others last year. You’ll be covered if you’re a pop, rock, folk fan, but if you dig dance music, stay home.

The timing of the festival, which falls right around Chicago’s Lollapalooza and Montreal’s Osheaga Festival, have led fans to say that the Edgefest line-up is medicore compared to its more well-known counterparts. Also, instead of being scheduled to occur over the weekend, Edgefest is bizarrely timed for a Wednesday afternoon.

However, there is are a few notable acts that are worth checking out. If you’re not into folk, there’s always the ultra talented B.C. rockers Mother Mother, the buzzing Monster Truck, and July Talk, who recently performed at Canadian Music Week.

What do you think of the Edgefest 2013 line-up? Sound off in the comments below.
