The 2014 JUNO Awards officially kicked things into high gear on Thursday night as nominees, industry professionals and Winnipeg music lovers all gathered at the Metropolitan Entertainment Theatre for the Sirius XM JUNO Awards Kick-Off.
The newly restored theatre is pulling double duty as the ‘Manitoba House’ over the next few days, so it was a fitting choice to have local rock outfits The New Meanies and Attica Riots roll out the welcome wagon. Both acts brought the almost-packed house to its feet, but left it to headliners The Trews to really get the crowd moving. The Nova Scotia four-piece played a short, punchy set of tunes that spanned the full range of their 17 year career, and ably set the stage this weekend’s many parties and shows ahead of Sunday’s awards broadcast.
