The directorial debut of Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch — the culmination of a long-gestating project that began with a 2009 song cycle of the same name — is a charmingly off-kilter modern musical set in the boho enclaves of Glasgow. Aspiring musician Eve (Emily Browning) escapes from the psychiatric hospital where she is being treated for anorexia and heads for Glasgow, where she soon hooks up with budding songwriter James (Olly Alexander) and guitarist Cass (Hannah Murray). The new friends form a three-piece called God Help the Girl, turn their twee up to eleven and set out to conquer the hearts of emo kids everywhere. A winningly whimsical indie-pop fantasia, God Help the Girl is “as indebted to the work of Bill Forsyth as that of Jacques Demy…. [a] lo-fi spellbinder that shuffles shyly over, sits itself down and then asks you to love it” (Xan Brooks, The Guardian).
