Last night, To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) held their annual Heavy and Light event, which seeks to create hope for people who struggle with addiction, depression, self-injury, and thoughts of suicide.
As the curtain rose and the stage lit up, a voice was heard speaking poetically, but no one could be seen on stage. And as people tried to find the person behind the voice, lights shone on the middle of the crowd as spoken word poet Anis Mojgani appeared. It was an interesting, yet symbolic and relevant message to begin the night.
Following Mojgani was Nashville-based folk rock singer-songwriter Matthew Perryman Jones, whose songs has appeared in Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, and more. While Jones had everyone’s attention with songs like “Top of the World” and “Until the Dawn Appears”, it was his soulful voice that made his performance special.
Next up was Seattle-based indie folk singer-songwriter Noah Gundersen, who released his full-length debut solo album, Ledges, on Feb. 11th, 2014, which was self-produced and recorded at Stone Gossard’s Studio Litho. Judging by the response of the crowd as he walked on stage, Gundersen was definitely welcomed in Hollywood. With his sister Abby joining him on vocals and violin, he sang tracks like “Boathouse”, “Poor Man’s Son”, and “Cigarettes.”
Following the Gundersens was a five-piece band called The Summer Set, who are currently in the studio recording their highly anticipated fourth album, which will be released later this summer via Fearless Records. Their high energy and stage presence were a treat, and with songs like “Maybe Tonight” and “Rescue”, The Summer Set definitely captured the hearts of everyone in the room.
To close out the night, the crowd let out a deafening roar as Jon Foreman, who is best known as the lead singer, guitarist, main songwriter and co-founder of Grammy-winning alt rock band Switchfoot, appeared on stage. It was clear why Foreman was the closing act of the night. Respected and adored by all, Foreman humbly played songs from his vast catalog including, “Your Love is Strong” and “Welcome to the Planet”, and he even covered Bad Religion’s “Sorrow”. It wasn’t long after he finished his set that the crowd wanted more. Everyone from the night returned to the stage with acoustic guitars as they closed out the night playing Tom Petty’s “Learning to Fly”.
TWLOHA spreads an amazing message about an amazing cause and this night hopefully will provide support and understanding for those that truly need it.
