Motorhead’s Lemmy Dead at 70

By: Curtis Sindrey –

Iconic Motorhead frontman Lemmy has died at the age of 70.

Iconic Motorhead frontman Lemmy has died at the age of 70.

Lemmy, aka Ian Fraser Kilmister, a founding member and frontman for iconic heavy metal band Motorhead, died around 4pm on Monday at the age of 70.

A cause of death has not yet been released.

Radio and TV host Eddie Trunk was the first to break the news. Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne also paid tribute via Twitter, “Lost one of my best friends, Lemmy, today. He will be sadly missed. He was a warrior and a legend. I will see you on the other side.”

While Motorhead’s management has yet to confirm the news, Trunk confirmed that an official statement will be released tomorrow (Dec. 29th).

Lemmy was infamous for his rockstar lifestyle, which had sidelined him in the past. According to an August 2015 interview with The Guardian, he cut down to a pack of cigarettes per week, and swapped his signature Jack and Coke for vodka and orange juice. Additionally, he suffered from diabetes, and in 2013 had an operation to implant a cardioverter-defibrillator into his chest to correct his irregular heartbeat.

Motorhead released their newest album, Bad Magic, on August 28th to critical acclaim.

More details to come.

Update: Motorhead’s official Facebook page posted an update confirming Lemmy’s death, and revealing the cause of death. Read the full statement below.

There is no easy way to say this…our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made it’s way down the street, with his family.

We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words.

We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please…play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD.
Have a drink or few.

Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself.

HE WOULD WANT EXACTLY THAT.
