Afropunk Brooklyn announces 2016 lineup

Afropunk Brooklyn 2016 takes place on August 27th and 28th at Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene.

Afropunk Brooklyn has announced its 2016 lineup.

The festival, which is set to take place Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene on August 27th and 28th, will feature performances by Ice Cube, Flying Lotus, The Internet, Thundercat, Angel Haze, Saul Williams Benjamin Booker, Skunk Anansie, Skye & Ross from Morcheeba, Galant, SPZRKT and many more (full lineup below). The festival will be home to more than 60 acts throughout the weekend and will feature three stages with its first ever Brainfeeder & Soulection stages.

During this important election year, with self-empowerment winds blowing through the air, the theme Afropunk Brooklyn has chosen for the 12th installment of the festival is “Power to the party.”

“Power, it’s a feeling, it’s an energy, it’s the undisputed connection between cause and effect – the best of us give it away, the worst usurp it, but living modern life to the fullest, means either mastering your relationship to it or walking in its shadow. We are not blind. Party is an oxymoron, it’s a gathering of many for a shared purpose and it’s also an outcast individual, it’s a lively social occasion as well as a gang – and the story of any party is never over, because like naked cities and the metaphysical “I”, there’s always another take. Power to the Party means trusting the friction, the transference of great capacity to the free spirit, belief in the high-heeled spark of the assembly, and the group-mind’s ability to choose a glorious path. This isn’t about getting elected, or being protected; it’s about staking a claim.”

In addition to the various performances, Afropunk Brooklyn will provide grounds to a vibrant community of well over 100 craft artisans and 25 food vendors. Attendees will also be able to view original artwork and murals created in conjunction with the Art for Amnesty (Amnesty International USA) and Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA). By providing an avenue for the community’s voice to be heard and celebrated the festival sticks to its roots as it aims to unleash freedom of expression while honoring the power of individuality.

The festival will also continue to keep its paid ticket as the one 0f the most affordable for the array of talent and will also bring back its earned ticket program. The earned ticket program, called Afropunk Army, gives fans the opportunity to volunteer for admittance. Last year, the festival worked closely with partners to provide volunteer activities and projects for 16,000 fans to complete in exchange for a ticket to the festival (a minimum of 8 hours of volunteer work will earn one GA weekend pass) this year. The volunteer program creates awareness for organizations and helps deliver a sustainable impact to communities in need.
