Tom Petty.
Iconic rock artist Tom Petty has died at the age of 66.
Paramedics rushed Petty to the hospital Sunday night after he was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest, according to TMZ.Β EMTs rushed to his Malibu home and were able to get a pulse. He was transported to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, however, doctors found no brain activity and made a decision to pull his life support.
In a statement, longtime Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers manager, Tony Dimitriades said, “We are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend, Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu, in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 PST surrounded by family, his bandmates, and friends.”
Petty rose to fame in the 1970s with his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who released several hit songs, including “American Girl,” “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” “Breakdown,” “Listen to Her Heart” and more.
Petty played his final concert at the Hollywood Bowl last Monday during the band’s 40th anniversary tour, which also included a stop at Rogers Arena in Vancouver in August.
Following the announcement of Pettyβs death, many musicians, including Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend), John Mayer, & Chuck D (Public Enemy, Prophets of Rage) took to social media to mourn the rock legend.
