Emerging singer-songwriter Teddy Grey is back with a pair of new singles titled “There’s Nothing That I Love (But You Come Close) (Sid & Nancy)” and “When Your Heart Breaks (Tennessee & Frank)”, which you can stream exclusively via Aesthetic Magazine below.

The first offering from Grey’s upcoming double album “The Great Failed Romances of the Twentieth Century,” “There’s Nothing That I Love (But You Come Close) (Sid & Nancy)” is 1 of 30 songs that uses an iconic couple of years past as the inspiration for a song dissecting and spotlighting the tumultuous union. And fittingly enough for a song about Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, the single is a crushing rock duet with blaring guitars and shouty vocals, showcasing the destructive relationship between punk rock’s Romeo and Juliet. The song works simultaneously as both a raucous, fun party thrown by two young, dumb kids who want nothing more than to end the night in each other’s arms, and also as a graphic, cautionary tale about the perils of codependence, drug usage, and the “live fast, die young” ethos. Featuring vocals from Angeline Meller as Nancy. Never mind the bollocks: Here’s “There’s Nothing That I Love (But You Come Close)”.

The second offering from Teddy Grey’s upcoming double album “The Great Failed Romances of the Twentieth Century,” “When Your Heart Breaks (Tennessee & Frank)” is an acoustic duet between Michael Lepore and Teddy Grey. Inspired by the troubled relationship between Tennessee Williams and his longtime partner and muse, Frank Merlot, the song takes a look at how heartbreak can both nurture and cripple creativity. The majority of Tennessee’s most celebrated work was written while he was with Frank, and it has long been suggested that he mined their difficult union for drama in his most famous plays. However, when the duo finally split and Merlot tragically died of lung cancer in 1963, Tennessee found it nearly impossible to go on. The heartbreak and depression that had once been an endless well of inspiration was now far too deep for him to see out of, and he never again regained his magic touch. After the blaring punk rock of previous single “There’s Nothing That I Love (But You Come Close) (Sid & Nancy),” “When Your Heart Breaks (Tennessee & Frank)” is a subtle, sparse, acoustic song, showcasing the full range of sounds on the album.

“A love song about two codependent junkies who ruined each other’s lives, but certainly seemed to have fun doing so,” said Grey about “There’s Nothing That I Love (But You Come Close) (Sid & Nancy).” “This song should feel like the romantic fantasy that runs through all junkies’ heads, before reality starts to creep in. ‘Let’s have as much fun tonight as we possibly can, because tomorrow morning’s gonna hurt.’”

“As much as we love to romanticize the myth of heartbreak being the impetus behind great, painful works of art, it just as often can destroy someone’s creative spirit altogether,” said Grey about “When Your Heart Breaks (Tennessee & Frank)”. “This song was written in about 10 minutes while I was hiding out from a large gathering that had become overbearing. I was just trying to capture a private, vulnerable moment.
