AEW’s new show Collision held an event at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto last night (June 24th) on the eve of Forbidden Door. Tons of great matches, and even better promos capped off a successful second ever episode of Collision.
Starting off strong with Chris Jericho and Minoru Suzuki, who are teaming up against Darby Allin and Sting at Forbidden Door. It’s revealed that Allin and Sting’s tag partner is none other than the legendary Tetsuya Naito, who entered to a huge pop.
Next was a fun and quickly-paced match that squared off Swerve Strickland and NJPW legend Hiroshi Tanahashi. For this match, you had lots of back-and-forth, lots of physicality, and lots of air guitar? But as soon as Tanahashi scored the victory with the pinfall, world champion MJF’s music hit. But instead of gracing the Toronto crowd with his presence, he had a pre-recorded video instead. In it, he vowed to embarrass Tanahashi at Forbidden Door and that he would kick his ass because “you are not on the level of the devil.”
Christian Cage is up next as he discussed the TNT title. He ragged on Toronto, his hometown, because “this city breeds losers and in turn it’s populated with losers. You’re okay with mediocrity, I’m not.” Cage then declares that there will be no more open challenges for the TNT title and that any contenders will have to claw, scratch, and fight if they want a title shot.
For the main event, AEW golden boy CM Punk teamed with the top guys FTR, and Ricky Starks to take on Bullet Club Gold and The Gunns. Unlike the debut episode of Collision that took place in Chicago, the reaction to Punk was VERY mixed. Lots of cheers, lots of boos, and a very divided crowd. Lots of fun back-and-forth with Punk and Jay “Switchblade” White with punches and chops in the corner, with White yelling at Punk “you don’t belong in this ring anymore.” Ref distraction, followed by a shot behind the ref’s back, and Jay White scores the victory for his team, and serves CM Punk his first lost on Collision.
Overall, AEW Collision has been very strong out of the gate, and this episode is no different. Whether you’re a casual AEW/Wrestling fan, or a hardcore fan, this episode had just about everything you could want in a few hours of wrestling, while also doing a great job at setting up the highly anticipated Forbidden Door PPV.
