To celebrate the release of Vicki Lovelee’s new single “Retaliate”, the emerging Chinese-Canadian alt-pop singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist curated a brand new “Sharpen Your Swords” Spotify playlist that is perfect for your villain era.
Melanie Martinez – “Death”
Starting off the playlist with one of my favourite artists! In this song, Melanie continuously sings the lyric “back from the dead”. It gives me the feeling of a phoenix rising from the ashes; wiping our tears and getting ready to thrive again. Plus it’s so fun chanting this lyric over and over again.
Lady Gaga – “Judas”
Lady Gaga has been one of my favourite artists since I was 15. When she released her song “Judas” I was immediately hooked. I added this song to the playlist because Judas infamously betrayed Jesus and what better way to start your villain era than this song? The production is electro pop and dance heavy, with a heavy bass. It’s so much fun to dance to.
Halsey – “Nightmare”
Listening to song immediately makes you feel like a badass. One of my favourite lyrics in this song is: “Come on little lady, give us a smile”. No, I ain’t got nothin’ to smile about”. The
Stray Kids – “Venom”
I wanted to add some kpop in this playlist and Stray Kids are one of my favourites. The production is so dope and makes you feel powerful. Even if you don’t understand Korean, the music itself makes you feel strong. The lyrics are so fun – it’s about trapping your prey in a tangled spiderweb.
Allie X – “ Devil I Know”
Allie X is one of my favourites artists, and an added bonus – she’s also Canadian! The production of this song has a mysterious feel to it. Listening to this song makes you feel like an undercover, sneaky villain; slowly plotting revenge underneath an innocent smile.
Ashnikko – “You Make Me Sick!”
This next song does a complete 180. The title already shows that there’s an urgency of disgust. I love Ashnikko and her ability to speak and sing her lyrics, adding screams when necessary to highlight importance of certain words. It’s so fun screaming the lyric “YOU MAKE ME SICK”.
BTS – “Ugh”
BTS is the first kpop group I really got into and this song has so much edge and grit. This song is about refusing to be stepped on and releasing all your anger and frustration because of it. As mentioned previously in Venom by Stray Kids, even if you don’t understand korean, you definitely understand the feel of this song.
Demi Lovato – “Eat Me”
This song is part of her album “Holy Fvck” and it’s one of my absolute favourites. A heavy rock album which showcases her vocal ability but the lyrics in the songs are my favourites too. In this song “Eat Me”, it talks about the impossible standards women need to live up to: “Be more predictable, Be less political, Not too original, Keep to tradition, but stay individual”.
Kim Petras – “Massacre”
This song is part of her hallowed inspired album “Turn Off The Lights”. I love the spooky feel of this song. The lyrics and production makes me feel powerful. In addition to Kim Petras being a pop icon, she’s the first openly trans artist to win a Grammy so I wanted to highlight her in this playlist as well!
Vickie Lovelee – “Retaliate”
To wrap up this playlist, I wanted to add my newest single “Retaliate”. A song I wrote about letting yourself feel all types of emotions – including jealousy, anger and pettiness. I realized the only way to overcome something is to let yourself feel those emotions first. This song makes you feel like you’re getting ready for war — you’re sharpening your swords and rallying up the troops. Whatever you’re facing, this song will help you power through it.
