Beloved alt-rock band Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA) tore up Toronto’s Budweiser Stage last night (Aug. 4th) with a hotly anticipated return to showcase their new LP In Times New Roman (out now). Once Josh Homme and co. strutted onto the stage, fans were treated to a blistering 19-song set of new tunes, deep cuts, and old favourites.
QOTSA are arguably one of, if not the tightest sounding live band going today. From Homme’s old Hollywood frontman vibe with guitar licks for days and a vocal styling perfectly fit for rock and roll, keyboard master (and The Dead Weather member) Dean Fertita, bassist Michael Shuman’s enticing bass riffs, Jon Theodore on drums with his tight precision, and hard-hitting drum style, and of course as Homme put it, the best dressed man in rock and roll, and a certainly underrated guitarist in Troy Van Leeuwen.
The chemistry between these five men is undeniable and it seems that they, especially Homme, have a renewed sense of enthusiasm and passion for performing live, especially after the last few years that Homme went through. You can tell he’s having a lot of fun on stage again, and it’s amazing to see, and it just adds to his mesmerizing presence he has on stage.
Set highlight “Song for the Dead” closed the set in dramatic fashion with that iconic chunky, fast riff and manic drumming from Theodore as the five-piece dive bombed the capacity crowd with the nearly six-minute hellscape of a track with hard-hitting drums, and apocalyptic guitar riffage.
Overall, Queens of the Stone Age is a must-see live band. Whether you’re a long-time, die-hard QOTSA fanatic, or you heard “No One Knows” at a party that one time, you can never go wrong with the unique sound of Queens of the Stone Age.
