Exclusive: Stream SWiiMS’ New Curated Spotify Playlist Feat. Songs That Inspired Their New Album “Into The Blue Night”

By: Staff –

To celebrate the release of SWiiMS’ (Singer Mai Diaz Langou, guitarist Colin Thompson, and bassist Cian O’Ruanaidh) new album Into The Blue Night, the Toronto-based indie rock band curated a brand new Spotify playlist featuring a collection of songs that inspired the creation of the album.

Mai

Beach House – “Dark Spring”

An immense opening track for an album I adore. Their album “7” came out in 2018 when I moved to Canada. SWiiMS was formed right after, so it’s been a wonderful soundtrack to have in that time of my life.

Muna – “Crying on the Bathroom Floor”

This song to me is pop perfection with dark melancholic undertones. Muna are an amazing band to see live and they’re a big inspiration.

St. Vincent – “Surgeon”

Doing what St Vincent does best, she contrasts the softest of openings with a very raw, intense and weird ending – This song also has my favorite St Vincent guitar lick ever.

Barbi Recanati – “En La Frente”

Barbi is an indie rock artist from Argentina (where I’m from). She fronts the band Utopians and is currently a solo artist. She also collaborates on a radio show where she talks about female/queer artists that have shaped rock music, so she’s kind of a teacher to me.

Cian

Manchester Orchestra – “The Gold”

I love how the energy shifts back and forth in this song. One of my favourite bands of all time.

Phoebe Bridgers – “The Gold”

An amazing cover of the original, so different and so good.

Into it. Over it. – “No Good Before Noon”

I usually get up pretty early but I like the sentiment in this song and best band name ever.

Prawn – “Settled”

Love the drum beat in this song. Love the guitars too

Colin

SoLong – “School 94”

I love the simplicity and sparseness of the music, leaving tons of space for the vocals.  That was something that we wanted to make sure to do for Mai, leave room for her incredible voice.

Sea Lemon – “Sunday”

I fell in love with the melody and phrasing of this one.  As well as the very 80’s guitar sounds.

Slowdive – “No Longer Making Time”

The way Slowdive intertwines their guitar melodies and creates textures & layers is something I love to do when writing music.

Breeze – “Ready for Love”

I wanted to include a song from our producer Josh Korody’s project Breeze’s upcoming record because he was instrumental in helping find the final voice and direction of Into The Blue Night.
