The glam metal comedians in Steel Panther rocked the House of Blues in Anaheim CA. on Feb. 02, supporting their 2023 album, On The Prowl. Originating in the Hollywood club circuit and growing into a world-wide phenomenon over the past two decades, anytime Steel Panther performs in Southern California, it feels like a special homecoming gig. The band kicked things off with their new record’s opening track, “Never Too Late (To Get Some Pussy Tonight)” and the packed crowd went wild.

The band’s chemistry with their new bassist, Spyder, was amazing and put any worries about longtime bassist Lexxi Foxx’s departure at ease. Steel Panther have the musical chops to play anything, and six albums worth of catchy tunes draw new fans in, but the unquantifiable aspect of the band’s success is their comedic banter. Going to a Steel Panther show isn’t just about embracing old school heavy metal nostalgia, it’s also quite literally one of the funniest comedy shows around. The humor is crude and filled with obscene profanities, but in the context of the band’s hedonistic 1980’s time capsule persona, it’s absolutely hilarious. Frontman Michael Starr and guitarist Satchel aren’t just glam metal gods, they’re also the rock world’s Abbott & Costello…but with more cocaine jokes.

Steel Panther played new songs like “Friends With Benefits” and “1987,” alongside classics like “Asian Hooker” and “17 Girls In A Row” where they brought at least 19 girls up from the audience to dance on stage with them. They ended the night with “Gloryhole” and it was absolutely glorious.

The newcomers in The Effect opened the show. Their brand of heavy rock with massive pop hooks definitely won the early bird Steel Panther fans over. The Effect made the best with their short opening time slot and packed in enough guitar solos, wicked synths, howling vocals and absolutely pummeling drum grooves to leave a lasting impression.
