Last night (Oct. 14th), Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall transformed into a nostalgic haven as Hanson and Phantom Planet delivered an electrifying performance that left fans buzzing. The venue, known for its intimate atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for this pair of beloved ’90s/00’s bands to help fans relive their youth.
Phantom Planet, who reunited in 2019 after a previous reunion in 2012, opened the night with a fun rock-pop sound. If all you know is their signature song “California”, from one of the 2000’s most beloved television shows The O.C., you’d be remiss to overlook the rest of their catalogue full of bright, fun and poppy guitar-driven songs.
The band delivered a short nine-song set that included classic hits like the aforementioned “California”, and “Lonely Day”, which saw popularity with Smallville and Laguna Beach, and had the crowd singing along in unison, creating a sense of camaraderie among fans old and new. Their fluid transitions between songs highlighted their musical prowess, and their tight harmonies showcased how well the band has maintained their chemistry since their popularity peak. Lead vocalist Alex Greenwald’s charismatic stage presence transported everyone back to the early 2000s with a fresh yet nostalgic flair that made you feel like you were knee-deep in polo shirts in a Hollister.
Once Hanson took to the stage, you knew you were in for something special. Throughout their career-arching set that included some expertly crafted covers of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”, Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”, and Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright?”, along with fan favourites like “MMMBop”, “Where’s The Love”, and “Lost Without Each Other”, the trio of brothers Isaac Hanson, Taylor Hanson, and Zac Hanson reminded everyone why they were both a worldwide ’90s phenomenon who first captured hearts all those years ago, and why they’ve enjoyed the longevity they have.
Throughout the concert, the trio shared anecdotes and created a warm, inviting atmosphere that made everyone feel like part of something. Hanson’s signature charm and playfulness shone through as they encouraged fans to dance and sing along to every lyric, effortlessly bridging the gap between stage and audience. The musicianship was exceptional as well as not only did the brothers switch between instruments and even sometimes vocal duties seamlessly, but their enthusiasm was infectious, ensuring that no one remained standing still.
As the concert drew to a close, you couldn’t help but feel good. The night was a celebration of nostalgia, artistry, and resilience, proving that both bands have evolved beautifully without losing the essence that endeared them to fans years ago. Leaving the Danforth Music Hall, you were filled with a sense of joy, knowing that you were lucky enough to experience something so wonderful.
