Last night (Apr. 26th), Toronto’s Rogers Centre once again played host to metal legends Metallica and new openers, 2000’s nu-metal pioneers Limp Bizkit, and metalcore band Ice Nine Kills.

Opening the night, Ice Nine Kills set the tone with an electrifying performance that seamlessly melded theatricality, and heavy beats, with tracks like “Ex-Mørtis” and “Hip to Be Scared”, which showcased their signature horror-themed lyrics and dynamic instrumentation.

Limp Bizkit unleashed a torrent of nostalgia and high-octane energy with hits like “Nookie” and “Break Stuff,” which transported the crowd back to the early 2000’s where red New York Yankees hats, and JNCO Jeans ruled. The unexpected inclusion of a snippet of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” thrilled fans and reminded everyone of the legacy these bands share. Frontman Fred Durst’s charisma and crowd engagement kept the energy high, and reminded everyone why these nu-metal icons dominated the 2000’s metal scene.

As night fell, the atmosphere shifted, building towards the main event. Metallica emerged with an explosive momentum, as they launched into “Whiplash”. They navigated through their iconic catalog that featured an entirely different setlist than their April 24th show, as they hammered through timeless staples like “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “Ride the Lightning.” Highlights include Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo’s “doodle” segment, where a nod to Rush’s “La Villa Strangiato” and “YYZ” flowed seamlessly into Metallica’s heavy soundscape. The epic “The Call of Ktulu” transported the audience to an ethereal realm, while classics like “Enter Sandman” make sure that every fan knew that these metal icons still ruled the genre.

With a setlist filled with both nostalgia and fresh sounds, the night was a testament to the longevity and greatness of these legendary bands. Metallica’s signature blend of riff-heavy metal and melodic undertones were expertly executed, with James Hetfield’s vocals soaring through every note. It doesn’t hurt that the visual effects and stage setup turned the Rogers Centre into a vivid kaleidoscopic backdrop for this unforgettable night of music.
