The Canadian Opera Company’s production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts was a truly mesmerizing experience that masterfully combined compelling storytelling, exquisite vocal performances, and innovative choreography.

Under the brilliant direction of conductor Speranza Scappucci, this rendition brought new vitality to the timeless Russian classic, with Serge Bennathan’s choreography adding a captivating visual dimension that seamlessly integrated dance into the narrative, heightening emotional depth and theatrical impact.

Andrii Kymach’s portrayal of Onegin was both nuanced and powerful, capturing the character’s complexity with a commanding stage presence and expressive vocals that conveyed his inner turmoil.

Lauren Fagan’s Tatiana was a revelation—her lyrical soprano beautifully conveyed her innocence and passion, creating a deeply empathetic connection with the audience.

Evan LeRoy Johnson delivered a compelling take on Lensky, blending lyrical finesse with raw emotion, culminating in a poignant performance that underscored the tragedy of the infamous duel during the production’s second act.

Megan Marino’s Olga added a charming and vivacious layer to the story, her voice radiant and full of life, complementing the overall cast superbly.

The orchestra, under Scappucci’ expertly led baton, delivered a lush, evocative accompaniment that brought Tchaikovsky’s lush melodies vividly to life, perfectly capturing the emotional nuances of the story.

The set and costume design were elegant yet evocative, immersing the audience into 19th-century Russia while allowing space for Bennathan’s innovative choreography to shine.

One of the highlights of the production (one of many), was the production’s attention to detail, from the subtle lighting choices to the expressive physical movements, demonstrated a deep understanding of both the narrative and the music, resulting in a performance that was as intellectually engaging as it was emotionally moving.

The cast’s chemistry and sincerity brought out the timeless themes of love, longing, regret, and societal constraints, making the story resonate profoundly with modern audiences.

The Canadian Opera Company’s “Eugene Onegin” was an outstanding achievement for the company—a beautifully balanced fusion of traditional operatic mastery and contemporary theatrical innovation. It left the audience captivated, moved, and inspired, reaffirming once again the COC’s reputation for excellence and its ability to reinvent classic works for new generations. This production will undoubtedly be remembered as a highlight of Toronto’s 2025 cultural calendar, offering a compelling and unforgettable glimpse into Tchaikovsky’s genius and the enduring power of opera as an emotional and artistic art form.

“Eugene Onegin” runs at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto until May 24th. Buy tickets here.
