Last night (Sept. 5th) at Rogers Stadium in Toronto, System of a Down and Deftones treated metal fans to an incredible double-header that showcased the best of alternative metal and nu-metal.

The energy in the stadium was electric from the moment Deftones took the stage with their atmospheric soundscapes and powerful riffs that captivated the crowd. Chino Moreno’s haunting vocals and the band’s tight musicianship created a mesmerizing atmosphere, that set the perfect tone for the night. Throughout an 18-song set, the alt-metal pioneers played several of their most beloved tracks like “Minerva”, “Change (In The House of Flies)”, and “7 Words”, along with tracks from their new album, Private Music, which dropped on August 22nd, including “My Mind is a Mountain”, and “Milk of the Madonna”.

As Deftones wrapped up their set, anticipation built for System of a Down, whose presence was nothing short of legendary. They delivered a dynamic and explosive performance, effortlessly blending their signature politically charged lyrics with infectious melodies and intricate rhythms. Lead singer Serj Tankian’s commanding voice and Daron Malakian’s fiery guitar work kept the audience engaged and energized throughout the evening. The band’s stage presence was magnetic, and their setlist was a perfect mix of classics like “Toxicity,” “Chop Suey,” and “B.Y.O.B.,” alongside newer tracks, demonstrating their enduring relevance and musical versatility.

Overall, System of a Down and Deftones proved that nu-metal/alt-metal didn’t die in the 2000’s and is very much alive as they proved that beyond their hits, they are still capable of producing new music that continues to resonate with both die-hard fans and newbies alike as both bands surge forward as iconic figures in the worldwide metal scene.
