Montreal-based indie rocker Mac DeMarco, who released his debut album, 2, last October via Captured Tracks, which was a longlisted nominee for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize, performed at The Hoxton in Toronto last night with Toronto-based shoegaze/indie-pop quartet Elsa, who released their new EP, I Do, last month via Mike Haliechuk’s (Fucked Up) label One Big Silence.

  1. Elsa was fantastic! Unfortunately for a variety of reasons, namely the sound mix (which was appalling) Mac DeMarco was atrocious. Call me old fashion, but I didn’t appreciate some of the base comments and antics.
I had really high hopes for this gig, as I am a new fan and travelled all the way from NYC. Should he ever come
to NYC, I will give him a second chance, as He 2 albums are truly a work of art, but I won’t be holding my breath.

    • Hi Darren,

Wow, you travelled a really far distance to see Mac DeMarco.

His shows are usually defined by his antics. Plus, he’s only 23 so you have to cut him some slack.

We also covered him when he performed in Iceland and he was amazing, but it’s great that you’re willing to give him a second chance and maybe at a different venue it’ll be a better performance.
