Montreal natives and now Toronto-based experiemental group Yamantaka // Sonic Titan brought their unique performance style to Ottawa’s Zaphod Beeblebrox on Friday night along with openers Boyhood.
Boyhood, which features members from fellow Ottawa bands White Wires and Mouth, performed an eight song set which relied heavily on material from their recent album When I’m Hungry, released in October 2012, including “Where Are My Beautiful Roses,” “Fresh Meat,” and “Thailand.” The album, which follows up November 2011’s Boyhood EP, was written, performed, recorded, and produced by frontwoman Caylie Runciman, features an experimental alt-pop flavour that is unique to Ottawa’s three-chord powerpop-laden music scene.
Combining an eclecticmix of genres including Asian C-pop and J-pop, progressive rock, heavy metal and industrial music, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan performed an eight song set that prominently featured tracks from their 2012 Polaris Music Prize short-listed album YT//ST including, “Reverse Crystal//Murder of a Spider,” “A Star Over Pureland,” and “Queens.”
Their theatric-laden live show is always a unique experience and it’s highly recommended that you catch this budding art collective live the next time they’re in town.
