Over 900 people came out for the fifth annual Riverfest Elora this past weekend, which took place in the scenic Bissell Park in Elora, Ontario.
This is the first year that Riverfest has booked artists from outside of the province and in addition to the headliner in Toronto-based indie rock quartet Born Ruffians, the bill couldn’t have been better. From Cape Breton-based fiddlerAshley MacIsaac to Halifax-based experimental pop madman Rich Aucoin, who brought his exhilarating live show to the small town of Elora, which included a chaotic mosh-pit underneath a giant rainbow-coloured parachute, a surfboard which he used to crowd surf and screened video projections of anything from Youtube clips to old movies that he synced to his music, the crowd was treated to an eclectic mix of sounds. If that wasn’t enough, Aucoin also projected his Twitter handle (@richaucoin) and his phone number (+1 902 877 6534) so fans could get his music for free.
In addition, Riverfest also featured several talented local bands and artists including Elora native Kevin Breit, who has worked as a session musician with everyone from Norah Jones, to Celine Dion, and Hugh Laurie (aka House), Guelph-based folk-blues quartet Lowlands, Guelph-based songstress Alanna Gurr, the Elora/Guelph based jazz, funk, alternative band The Boo Radley Project, which featured festival co-organizer Haydn Watters on drums and “auxiliary percussion” and his brother Emmett on lead vocals, guitar, synth and flute, and The Shawn Connerys.
