This weekend, Pasadena’s Rose Bowl will host Shaun White’s Air + Style event as of the very few recurring festivals that flourish with a collaboration of sports and music cultures.
White, former two-time champion of Air + Style, is the majority of the shareholder of the Air + Style company. In the 2014-15 season, Air + Style has gone worldwide with events in Beijing, Innsbruck, and now, for the first time, Los Angeles.
Charly Weger and snowboard photographer Andrew Hourmont initiated the Air + Style movement with the very first contest in Innsbruck. Although they expected minimal crowds at the competition, several thousand fans showed up to see a single Straight Jump from each rider. Shortly after, the Air + Style community expanded and eventually developed into one of the most influential snowboarding events of all-time.
With musical headliners including Compton-native Kendrick Lamar and rising EDM artists Steve Aoki and Diplo, Air + Style is sure to attract crowds from both ends of the festival-attendee spectrum.
If you’re planning on attending Air + Style, here are three artists that you must catch this weekend:
Compton native and rising influential hip-hop star Kendrick Lamar, who opened for BMIA headliner Kanye West on his Yeezus tour in 2013, will captivate the crowd. The 27-year-old rapper and songwriter is best known for his interesting take on life whilst living in Southern California’s tough streets. Also affiliated with rap star and producer Dr. Dre, Lamar will perform many tracks from his debut major-label record good kid, m.A.A.d City, including fan favourite “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” and “m.A.A.d City.”
Portugal The Man
Portland natives Portugal the Man are an American rock band with a groovy vibe and funky melodies. The harmonizing between the artists entice crowds, regardless of what track they’re performing. After releasing their album “Evil Friends”, they took the alternative music world by storm and began to pop up on every major international festival lineup. Today, the band is in the studio working on new melodic tracks to add to their discography that originated in 2001.
Dim Mak Records founder and DJ Steve Aoki will be one of the most insane sets of the weekend. Known for “caking” his crowd – yes, literally throwing frosted cake on them – Aoki’s DJ sets include tons of crowd surfing, bass drops, and sticky, sweet fun. His current hit, “Delirious” is gracing the charts and radio stations across America. The crowd energy and spontaneous feel of his performance will definitely make history for this uprising festival. Be sure to catch his set for an unforgettable EDM experience.
While musical acts of every genre take the stages, Sage Kotsenburg, the flying ace of the 2014 Winter Olympics, will be among the 32 snowboarders and skiers competing Saturday and Sunday in the last leg of a three-city international tour. The winner of the competition takes home $50,000.
With a grand amount of snowboarders and freestyle skiers competing this weekend, the 16-story, 450-foot-long ramp and 70-foot jump is going to serve as the stomping ground of the competitions.
Catch spectators of all ages as White combines all of his passions in one event with hopes to inspire younger generations. Children 10 years old and younger can get in free with an adult. White and A+S are bringing snow, diverse artists and stellar athletes to Los Angeles.
