10 Must-See Bands at Canadian Music Week 2016

The 2016 Canadian Music Week will be six days of musical-madness. From May 2-8, award shows and presentations, and back-to-back performances will pack venues sprawled across downtown Toronto with excited fans.

The Zolas

West Coast vibes emanate from this young band’s tunes. These guys proved that power punk/pop isn’t dead with their synth powered tracks. Tunes from their new album, Swooner, would have definitely made the cut on an The OC (Bonus: they’re also nominated for an Indie award).

Tori Kelly

The Internet star shot her way to stardom after a few false starts on American Idol and a full YouTube performance archive. Eventually her tenacity won-out and she landed a record deal and toured extensively. With a crazy vocal range, charted singles and sweet persona she will be a must-see at CMW.

Woodes

All the way from Australia, 23-year-old Elle Graham or, Woodes will make the trek to CMW. Her breathy and jazzy vocals were layered into cool atmospheric mixes posted on her SoundCloud. With three shows at CMW you can’t miss her chill and dark sound live.

TOPS

Sultry 80s vocals met surfer guitar swells in TOPS’ new album, Picture You Staring. The 4-piece pop band from Montreal band drew a cult following with their beach house vibes and soothing vocals. Their show at Lees will be one to see.

The Glazzies

Childhood friends turned bandmates, The Glazzies will take on CMW. Distorted guitars and Influenced by 90s grunge and punk of the 2000s dominate this two piece band of a drummer and guitarist. Thrash with the Sag Harbour natives at either The Supermarket in Kensington or Cherry Cola’s this CMW.

Eagles Of Death Metal

Yes, that’s correct. One of the best mesh of individuals wrapped up in a band. Their latest album, Zipper Down, shreds away any doubt that they are here to play, infuse a few unholy moments and a lot of Rock n’ Roll. Plus the one question anyone and everyone will ask is ‘How can you miss this?’

Fat White Family

Hardcore and Punk is an afterthought with Fat White Family. Not for the faint of heart but rather the reckless and dedicated to filth will help fuel your need to bask in this band’s genre defining crass and crash take on music.

Tegan And Sara

Whether as a teenager Tegan and Sara played on your MP3 player or a playlist someone made for you. Their latest album, Love You To Death, has certainly made its way into your ears. The nostalgia may be heavy on this night but come on… you’re only young once.

With The Black Lips on tour, this Atlanta, Georgia band is exactly what CMW 2016 needs. A dash of loud, brash and wild musicians who attract a rather crazed set once they hit the stage. Plus The Black Lips never disappoint by throwing out their diverse catalog of songs to play live.
