DJ/Producer Sara Simms has combined her love of alternative rock and techno in a cover of Nirvana’s ‘Heart Shaped Box’. Working together with producer Graham Miller, the Toronto-based pair have been able to construct a more traditional rock arrangement using live instrumentation whilst remaining true to her electronic roots. Watch it below.
The official music video is directed by Katherine Kwan and pays homage to Nirvana’s seminal “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video. The visuals depict a three piece female band at a local live show and the musicians include Sara’s younger sister Melle Oh on drums alongside internationally renowned artist and musician Erica EGR Balon on bass. The final verse in the video is a tribute to a famous scene from the original “Heart Shaped Box” video.
“Heart Shaped Box” is Simms’ first single of 2017 on her own label Simmetry Sounds and was released on all digital platforms including Spotify, Beatport and iTunes on February 14th. Her ability to push musical boundaries by infusing new sounds with electronica make her an artist to watch this year.
