Today, Vancouver’s own Jessicka released the video for her brand new single “Penniless Fools”, which you can watch exclusively on Aesthetic Magazine below.
“It started as a visual of an abandoned desert motel, a sort of glamourized death of The American Dream,” says Jessicka of the new single. “But then I thought of what was happening in Detroit and how I was even seeing the impact of this mega mall, dollar store culture shut down cherished small businesses in my hometown. The nature of it all is so cyclical, the less our jobs pay the less we can afford to pay for our lives. More than that though it’s an ode to the people working so hard to eke out a living and just maybe get that one vacation from the grind. My heart is with them, I am them.”
At the end of last year, Jessicka released her new EP, Uh Oh, which was produced by Brad Ferguson, and features contributions from some of the Vancouver music scene’s top players, including: Juno Award-winning violinist Jesse Zubot and members of Mother Mother. Jessicka, who describes the overarching themes of the EP as “Coming of age mixed with coming to terms with reality” – has an unabashed love of pop music, and the results are as visceral as they are cerebral.
