Experimental-Pop producer Selci is back with her new single “Strangers”, which you can stream exclusively via Aesthetic Magazine below.
With Effervescence, the Calgary artist’s prowess as a budding electronic producer abounds, and “Strangers” is a perfect case in point. The track hums along to a stuttering synth groove as Selci sings with a hushed sigh and punctuated blow about a run-in with an ex-lover, asking “Am I not allowed to look into your eyes like I once did/ Are we just strangers now?”
“Strangers” captures a question in a moment. “It’s about an intense confrontation that I had with a past lover where I struggled to understand how it would never be the same,” Selci says. “I wrote the hook with a palpable slap of emotion to personify that drop in your chest when you see an old partner for the first time once it’s over.”
In a series of flashbacks, Selci recalls the painful process of breaking up. Each verse playing out like a final, one-sided exchange and desperate plea for an answer. “It’s a song about knowing someone—their mind, their body—so intimately,” she adds. “And then having that overwhelming feeling that you no longer know them at all.”
On Effervescence, Selci bridges the seductive, iconoclastic electronics of FKA twigs, the bedroom R&B of Jessy Lanza, and the minimalist-pop of James Blake to shape her sonic vision. Though trained in opera, contemporary and classical musical styles, Selci uses ambience and rhythm to compose sounds that exist on the fringes of pop music.
Sound guru Sylvia Massy (Prince, Kate Bush) was enlisted to mix the EP and Matt Colton (New Order, Blood Orange, James Blake) was tapped for his mastering touch. Adding further to the five-song collection, the record features an array of vintage flourishes including rare instruments and equipment from the National Music Centre in Calgary, Canada.
Over the past year, Selci has shared bills with Neon Indian and Ryan Hemsworth and played festivals such as Canadian Music Week, Sled Island Music & Arts Festival, Big Fun Festival, and more. Her Effervescence Tour will cross Canada in October of 2019.
