Exclusive: Stream Kasador’s New Curated Spotify Playlist!

In celebration of Canadian alt-rock band Kasador’s new single and video, “High Rise”, they group curated an exclusive new Spotify playlist that inspired their new music, which you can stream exclusively via Aesthetic Magazine below.

When the Levee Breaks – Led Zeppelin 

In recording our album Brood & Bloom we employed the classic drum mic at the top of the stairway technique when recording all drums – a technique taken directly from Led Zeppelin. Further, when we were tracking the song “Brood & Bloom”, producer Graham Walsh suggested that Stephen copy the kick pattern used in Zep’s “When The Levee Breaks”. He copied it note for note and instantly everyone was on board.

Tyson Vs Douglas – The Killers
One of our goals when recording this record was to capture a large bombastic sound that Will could only describe as ‘cinematic’. The Killers album Wonderful, Wonderful is chock-full of songs that are larger than life and have a fullness and “Tyson Vs Douglas” really demonstrates this feeling. We would reference the feeling this song delivers by blasting in headphones and on the studio speakers. Our tune Brood & Bloom really demonstrates the cinematic feel we were going for, reminding us of a Quentin Tarantino movie. Honourable mention to “Run For Cover” off that album because it came out when we were first tracking and quickly became a favourite of ours to blast!

Last of The Unplucked Gems – The Tragically Hip 

This was a song that gave us confidence and drive to record some interludes we had in our back pocket but weren’t 100 per cent sold on the idea of. They were 1-3 minute song ideas that were heavy on the instrumental side, but didn’t really have verses or choruses in a lyrical sense. In the end we decided to included them on the album as they provide context for particular songs and the album as a whole. We thought that the songs themselves might really stick with some people despite not fitting your classic song layout or formula (repeating chorus, lyrical hooks, etc…). An honourable mention to The 1975 for their 15+ song albums and interludes. 

The Outfield – The Night Game

This track has a lot of pop sensibilities without reverting to over synthesized instrumentation and vocals. It’s everything you want in a pop song, while still utilizing organic instrumentation. The influence this song had on us is the most obvious in a tune on our upcoming album called “Pinched Nerve”. There are parallels between the chorus harmonies, melody, and the way the backing vocals trade off with the lead, as well as the use of airy/spacey keyboards providing that lift in the chorus.

Pacifier – Catfish and The Bottleman 

As a four-piece rock band, Catfish has been an inspiration for us since their first album came out. The way that they use massive guitars and drone vocals to provide a wave of sound is so impressive and something we aspired for on this record, especially during guitar solos. We want the listener to really feel that energy when those sections kick in. “Pacifier” has an awesome drop at the chorus that carries Van’s (the singers) frustration and the listener can feel it. Thats what we tried to capture in many songs and Pacifier was referenced multiple times, especially when recording our song “Could Have Loved You”. 

Like A Stone – Audioslave

We referenced a lot of Tim Commerford’s bass sounds/tones in making this record, in particular looking for that classic auto-wah accompanied by distortion and lots of low end. This is perhaps most obvious on a track called “Givin’ It Up”. Additionally in writing the song “Brood & Bloom” we found ourselves drawing parallels to Chris Cornell’s vocal melodies more often than not.

Santa Fe – Wintersleep

We were so determined to capture the energy of our live show in recording our first/latest record and Will was really inspired by how Wintersleep delivered the high energy in this song. Between powerful guitars and driving drums, it really makes you want to jump at a club. There are also some very cool extra sounds layered into the song that give it a great texture. You can really hear it at the end of the song with a spinning beeping noise that moves between the left and right speakers. 

Last of My Kind – Jason Isbell 

Jason Isbell’s penchant for storytelling and ability to place the listener into detailed stories in which he has totally fabricated was definitely a big inspiration for “Skeleton Park” (recorded early during the Brood & Bloom session and released in 2017). Inspired by Isbell prior to going into the studio, we decided to try our hand at storytelling for the first time and strung together this story about a murder that takes place in a public park in our hometown of Kingston. The park has a dark history and was the site of mass burials during the cholera epidemic, as well as a graveside for soldiers in 1819. 

Feet Don’t Fail Me – Queens Of The Stone Age

This song really connected with us from a musical standpoint. It strikes this perfect balance between rock and funk where it has you dancing and head banging at the same time. We really appreciate when artists can explore different genres within one piece of work. Additionally, we referenced the organ sounding bass part in this song in trying to fine tune the bass tones in “High Rise”. Lastly, the over a minute long intro to this song (which is a very slow build – well worth the wait) really hammered home to us how important context is for every song if you want it to hit the listener how it should.

Lola + Joseph – July Talk

As a band we loved July Talk’s second album Touch and were inspired by how the band recorded much of the album live off the floor in an attempt to replicate their live show, even including mistakes on the album. When recording our album and trying to replicate our live show, we made sure to track as much as we could live off the floor, and all of the drum sounds are real and not samples. The opening guitar riff to Lola + Joseph likely did inspire the opening guitar riff to “Brood & Bloom”.
