Emerging Toronto-based alt-rock band girlongirl are back with a new track titled “Take”, which you can stream exclusively via Aesthetic Magazine below.
“Take” was always set out to be an accurate representation of a girlongirl show – no frills. The melodic, catchy riffs from the Jam Candy EP are still present, but now they are amplified. The 10-song album shares its name with the title track and lead single, out February 21st.
“Take”, the song, is equal parts love and frustration, and kicks off the album with a ripping start. Throughout the verses, Heenan nods to bands she has loved, who have been strong influences throughout her music career, inspiring her writing today. (“I wrote a song/A Protomartyr song/But the more I sang/It just sounds like Wolf Parade”). “Take” refers, literally, to taking these musical influences – chord progressions, vocal styles, harmonies etc. – and putting them all together with her own spin to make something new.
The chorus acknowledges the frustration in feeling as though she can’t measure up to the influences mentioned within the verses. She expands, “This song serves as a reminder that nobody ever feels perfectly happy [with their writing], but to do it anyway, enjoy the journey, and pay homage to the music that has changed your life.”
“Take” will be released March 13th. Digital pre-order for the album begins tomorrow, February 21st.
