Exclusive Premiere: Selci Shares Vision of Future Nostalgia with New Video for “Live Your Light”

By: Staff –

On the heels of her A Soft Place EP release, Calgary alt-pop artist Selci invites us deeper into her surrealist vision with the video for “Live Your Light”, which you can watch exclusively via Aesthetic Magazine below.

Co-directed with emerging filmmaker Annabeth Trondsen—who also contributed to Selci’s darkly humorous “For You” video—the duo’s latest offering revolves around the concept of future nostalgia. With childhood photos scattered on the ground and shots of home videos, Selci brings her adolescence into a hypnotic, neon-lit future.

Encased in subaquatic flourishes and soft, fluttering synths, there is a gleaming declaration of peace that comes in “Live Your Light,” which also features swirling vocals from Toronto-based artist Seyblu, who can be seen singing in the video via projections on the wall.

“The driving narrative of A Soft Place is about finding places of comfort and solace,” Selci says. “This song follows in line with that message. It asks us to live in the present, celebrate self-acceptance, and embrace our true selves.”

Over the course of two years and two well-received EPs, Selci has shared six videos that capture the hallucinatory mind of an artist with much more to express than words.

“Videos give me a place to express my inner world,” she says. “I am not a painter or sculpture, so creating sets and stories let me release the surreal workings of my mind. I love creating new worlds to share with people.”

Always finding new ways to express herself, Selci will be releasing a companion zine to the EP, also called A SOFT PLACE, that is set for release in late 2020. The zine will feature a collage of Selci’s own photography work, and Q&As with other creative minds, including keys player Timothonius, jewelry designer Sunday Feel, visual artist Abigail Wall, and fashion stylist Le Freak. A portion of proceeds from the sale of the zine will go to The Okra Project, a collective that seeks to address the global crisis faced by Black trans people by providing home-cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black trans folks wherever they can be reached.
