To celebrate the release of Laurent Bourque’s new single “EASY”, the Toronto-based singer-songwriter curated a brand new Spotify playlist featuring songs that inspired the single that you can stream below.
Angele – “Balance Ton Quoi”
Belgium’s finest pop star! Angele is the thing I put on when I need a pick-me-up. When I was making “EASY” I was very conscious about reducing the song to its most important and basic elements. Angele always does that well in her songs… and her voice is insanely addictive!
Parcels – “Lightenup”
Parcels are my favourite “band” around these days. By “band” I mean a group of people with a solid and consistent aesthetic that make incredible music. They are also probably some of the best musicians around and each member is so profoundly good at their instrument. Other than that… what’s not to love about catchy disco?
Maroon 5 & SZA – “What Lovers Do”
I love Maroon 5. There’s no one better out there in the pop world at adapting their sound with the swaying tides. Sure, their albums aren’t great but their singles are GREAT. And SZA…. I mean C’mon…. One of my favourite voices out there period!
Lily Allen – “Smile”
I’ve loved this song since it first came out in 2006. The drums in this tune heavily influenced how we treated the drums in “EASY”. I miss Lily… I wish she would tour again 😦
Dua Lipa – “Pretty Please”
I think we can all agree that Dua has already reached legend status. Okay, you might be sick of “Levitating” by now after hearing it everywhere for a year straight but her songs are undeniable. This one is so simple and groovy.
Gorillaz – “On Melancholy Hill”
The common thread with all these songs for me is groove, the interplay between the drums and bass were crucial to “EASY”. “On Melancholy Hill” from Gorillaz hits that perfect walking down the street groove. It’s a song I always put on when I’m feeling nostalgic, it’s so beautiful and simple.
Rex Orange County & Benny Sings – “Loving is Easy”
Here’s another disco tune for you! Rex and Benny wrote this song together and their styles fit so well together.
Bee Gees – “More Than a Woman”
Bee Gees are one of my favourite bands of all time. If you haven’t watched the recent documentary from HBO you really should check it out! They are some of the most gifted songwriters in music history and their grooves have influenced everything you’ve ever heard in pop music.
Caroline Polachek – “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings”
Caroline was my favourite discovery of 2019. This song is one of the best pop songs I’ve heard in years. It’s impossible not to want to dance along when you put it on!
Vince Staples – “Big Fish”
Vince Staples is one of my favourite artists out there and definitely my hip hop artist of choice. I love the simple track that just lets his voice carry so much rhythmic excitement. When we made “EASY” we wanted to make a “nod along” kind of song and Big Fish is just that.
