Emerging Vancouver-based pop/R&B artist Connor Nelson is back with his brand new, R&B/Pop single “Black” – a song about dating in the modern age and the unfortunately common occurrence of “ghosting”. Stream it exclusively via Aesthetic Magazine below.
“After getting left on read and subsequently being ghosted, I decided to get something out of it, and write a song about the experience. “Black” tells a story of longing and nostalgia, possesses a melody you can’t help but sing along to, and a midnight pop production with elements of electropop,” said Nelson.
Written from the devastating personal experience of liking someone who suddenly ends all communication, “Black” shares the emotions and frustrations felt when one person has feelings for the other, who doesn’t feel the same way back. Titled “Black” as it alludes to the colour or phone screens that are not lighting up with text messages, the song showcases Nelson’s advanced lyric writing and vocal stylings, which include lush harmonies that compliment the electronic beat layered throughout the song. Dark-Pop with R&B elements, “Black” begins with an 80’s Pop synth and progresses into a modern, radio friendly track with a melody that compliments the emotion of the song. Aiming to have listeners take in his lyrics, Nelson’s self-written and self-produced track features his Pop styled vocals at the forefront, opting for an easy-to-follow beat to ensure that the message of the song makes it across to fans both old and new.
Nelson’s music emits layers of pop with a hint of nostalgia. Though his sultry vocals are laced with R&B, his accompaniment presents the perfect mash up of indie pop, dark pop, and electropop. He uses music as a medium to connect to his feelings and hopes to deliver the message to his listeners that “it’s okay to feel and they are not alone in feeling their emotions.”
Nelson distinguished himself as a musician from a young age. He won the Youth Talent Search BC in Port Moody in 2014 and made the top 4 in season 5 of “The Shot”. He broke out onto the world stage as a singer songwriter in 2019, just a month shy of his high school graduation, with his debut single ‘Psychic’ which garnered over 100K streams on Spotify in less than a year. Nelson draws inspiration from the likes of Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Isaac Dunbar to name a few, and as of 2021, Connor received a diploma in music production, which has allowed him to sing, write, and produce almost all of his songs. Nelson is currently collaborating with JUNO nominated producer Nathan Chiu and plans to release more singles in 2022.
