Exclusive: Stream Brendan Scott Friel’s New Curated Breakup Spotify Playlist

By: Staff –

To celebrate the release of Brendan Scott Friel’s new track “Piece of You”, the emerging Canadian singer-songwriter curated a brand new curated Spotify playlist featuring the best breakup songs. Stream it exclusively via Aesthetic Magazine below.

There’s a specific feeling that goes along with doing something purely driven by your emotions in spite of logic telling you otherwise. You can know fully well that that person is wrong for you, or that what you are doing with them is wrong but at the same time feel incapable of stopping yourself. With that comes a complex mix of guilt, excitement, longing and helplessness. That’s what “Piece of You” is about.

“I’m not proud of it, but I have been on both sides of the situation this song is about,” says Friel. “I feel like that fact is baked into this song and allows it to offer some special insight into the situation. I really hope that resonates when you listen to it.”

Gotye – “Somebody I Used to Know”

Overplayed? Perhaps. But I don’t know that there’s a better track to kick off a break up playlist than this. This one speaks for itself.

Brendan Scott Friel – “Piece of You”

Snuck myself on here of course. This one is about being in love with who someone USED to be..or maybe who we just imagined they were. It can be so hard to cut these people out of your life so you usually end up hanging on longer than you should and ultimately hurting yourself more.

Leif Vollebekk – “I’m Not Your Lover”

“I see a jacket I’d wear until I gave it to you.” Devastating. Let’s all take a moment to wallow with Leif in this song and try to come to terms with our new reality.

Phoebe Bridgers – “Motion Sickness”

Alright time to get angry. I assume your ex never sang with an english accent but I’m sure they did something that annoyed the hell out of you.

Henry Jamison – “Through a Glass”

A perfect capture of all the awful insecurity that comes with being in a relationship. I feel ya Henry, I feel ya.

Leon Bridges – “Pull Away”

I’m a sucker for a classic 6/8 breakup jam and those lonely backup vocals hit just right in this one.

Lake Street Dive – “Good Kisser”

Oh DAMN. A little spiteful? Hell ya. “You got your story, and you know I’ve got mine.” No truer words could be spoken.

Harry Styles – “From The Dining Table”

I wish I wrote this guitar part. It is brilliant. Luckily it’s about a breakup because I would have forced it onto this playlist either way.

Donovan Woods – “Grew Apart”

One of my biggest influences and fellow Canadian sad song creator. The bridge in this song is a masterpiece. “It is what it is man, it’s alright.” Who hasn’t said that trying to act tough through a breakup!?

Claud – “Soft Spot”

I love this track, and is dancing around the same theme as my song Piece of You. Some people there’s just some unexplainable soft spot for that you would let get away with murder. Be careful out there!

Gregory Alan Isakov – “Was I Just Another One”

This wouldn’t be a BSF playlist if I didn’t end on a somber note. I don’t know that this is necessarily a breakup song but there’s something so tragic to me in the line “Did I stumble through your darkness or was I just another one?”
