Tegan and Sara return with their new single “Our Year”, their first new single since the 2022 release of their tenth studio album, Crybaby.
The West Coast collaboration, featuring Lights and produced by Felix Cartal, is a melding of three distinct artists with deep ties to the Canadian music community and a deep respect for one another. Shot in Vancouver, the official video for the “Our Year” is also out today – watch below.
“Our Year” began as an early demo that Tegan sent to Cartal, who immediately connected with its distinctive mix of humour and honesty. Cartal came on to produce the track, with Lights soon joining for the collaboration. “Our dream was to get Lights on the record,” shares Tegan. “When she agreed to get involved, I felt immediately that we were making something special.”
For Lights, an admirer of Tegan and Sara’s work and close friend and creative peer of Cartal, the opportunity carried its own significance. “For me this song is one of those heritage moments, those legacy things that feel like if you died today, you’d be happy with where you left off,” she says. “I’m such a long-time fan of Tegan and Sara, all that they represent and do and create.”
Part love letter to Vancouver, and part hard-bitten commentary on the current economy, at its heart “Our Year” is about the optimism that comes with a fresh start, and the reality that even the best-laid plans sometimes don’t go the way we’d hoped. As Lights says, “We wanted to share a tongue in cheek approach to more or less bitching about the economy while still celebrating that we made it this far, and that there’s always hope to keep striving for.”
For Tegan, the joy of creativity came from the collaboration; “I feel like we’re at a point in our career where everything we put out should have meaning — but also feel fun,” she says. “Our band has always been about building community, and it was really cool to build this song with other people, to include so many other artists in the process.”
In addition to the new single, on September 1st Tegan released her debut solo novel Merry Christmess – a funny, warm-hearted middle-grade novel about sisterhood, family, and how the holiday season is a time to be merry, and messy.
Tegan and Sara have also been announced to join Hilary Duff on select dates of her 2027 the lucky me tour – tickets are on-sale on Friday, October 2 at 10:00 a.m. local.
