Vancouver-based indie rock quintet Mother Mother, who headlined the River stage, broke the pattern of small crowds for headlining bands at the River stage. The Ryan Guldemond-led band played to a very large and very excited crowd who gave them as much energy as the band gave back to the crowd. Guldemond and company mixed up their set by using both electric and acoustic guitars, and plucking an eclectic mix of tracks nearly spanned their four-album discography including “O My Heart” from their 2008 album of the same name, “Let’s Fall In Love” from their 2012 album, The Sticks, and their hit single, “The Stand”, from their 2011 album, Eureka, which opened the show and quickly had the crowd in the palm of their hand and they knew how to keep them there.
Vermont-based rockers Grace Potter and the Nocturnals opened up the Claridge stage at 6:15pm. Frontwoman Grace Potter took our breath away when she walked on stage in a stunning glittering white gown. She opened with “Medicine” from their 2010 self titled album. She was very active on stage while singing, as she jumped and ran around embracing band members and addressing the crowd. She then picked up her signature Gibson Flying V guitar and continued to jump around and throw high kicks in the air as she sang and played with almost perfection in her full length dress. Playing a cover song at a large festival is usually a good bet as most fans are likely attending the festival to see somebody else, and Grace Potter took that bet and won as their cover of Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl” had everybody singing along. After the show while waiting for the next band to come on, another photographer remarked to me that she thinks she had just shot the sexiest woman alive, and I agreed. Grace Potter and the nocturnals was by far the best opener of bluesfest.
