Song: Twin Sized Mattress
Band: The Front Bottoms
Album: Talon of The Hawk
Label: Bar None Records
Released: May 21st, 2013

The best track from their excellent sophomore album, it shows The Front Bottoms doing what they do best.

Song: Giorgio By Moroder
Artist: Daft Punk
Album: Random Access Memories
Label: Columbia
Released: May 17th, 2013

eDaft Punk integrated this history lesson into their new album, and not only does it highlight just how cool Giovanni Giorgi Moroder is, but it also pairs it with a stellar track.

Song: Fri-End
Artist: Kate Nash
Album: Girl Talk
Label: Have 10p Records
Released: March 4th, 2013

Kate Nash’s stylistic 180 on Girl Talk was highlighted by this excellent track, combining the spirit of Riot Grrl styled punk with her signature pop sound.

Song: Warsaw
Artist: Dessa
Album: Parts Of Speech
Label: Doomtree Records
Released: June 25th, 2013

The best track from a very strong second full length effort for Dessa, which finds her balancing both her strong singing voice, and her excellent rapping.

Song: Scraping Up The Pieces
Band: Twin Forks
Label: Dine Alone Records
Released: September 17th, 2013

This track highlights everything that works so well about Chris Carrabba’s new retro folk project. From the handclaps to the spirited mandolin you can’t help but get your toe tapping on.

  1. Wow Sasha this list is pretty bad. Four songs? Seriously dude…You couldn’t even include a Jhene Aiko song? She’s killing it this year.

    • Sorry that I couldn’t satisfy you with an inherently subjective list that makes me shorten a year’s worth of music into five songs. Jhene Aiko and so many other people that didn’t make this list were awesome this year.
