The News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) is voicing its concern over a decision to not allow photographers representing independent news outlets access to the final concert of Canada’s iconic Canadian rock group The Tragically Hip taking place later today in Kingston, Ontario. Instead, organizers are offering handout images from the tour photographer.

NPAC is lobbying for at least one pool photographer from an independent news organization to be allowed to document this historic music event that many Canadians will cherish for many years to come.

The Canadian Press has “”repeatedly asked that this position be reconsidered” and NPAC supports this request.

The Canadian Press has been Canada’s visual historians since 1917 and operates the largest online editorial archive of news pictures shot by photojournalists. It was the first in Canada to develop this online archive in 1996 and now it is home to over two million digital images with hundreds of images added each day.

It is NPAC’s hope this decision to exclude independent photojournalists from this event be reversed.

You can listen or watch The Tragically Hip’s final concert beginning at 8:30pm.
