To celebrate the release of Emma Hewson’s new single “Mismatched”, the emerging Toronto-based singer/pianist/songwriter curated a brand new curated “Female Producers” Spotify playlist, which you can stream below.
Hewson has made herself known as a versatile session musician, teacher, and original artist. Hewson’s background in music developed from a foundation of 12 years of classical piano, before pursuing a music degree at Toronto’s York University where she experimented with jazz and free improvisation. Outside of formal education, Hewson also honed her unique style of original music, playing intricate, jazzy piano grooves while singing with a heavy R&B influence. Her first EP, EMMA, was released in 2014, and she is currently working on producing original music and releasing body-positive artworks.
New single, “Mismatched,” was written when Hewson was coming to terms with the fact that she would eventually have to leave the relationship she was in at the time. While writing, Hewson melded a lot of the experiences of her past relationships together, thinking of the specifically dramatic and mismatched, if you will, moments in previous relationships.
Kimbra – Her entire ‘Golden Echo’ album and specifically the song “Nobody But You”
Kimbra is one of my all-time favourite artists and such an inspiration as a producer. You may know her from her collab with Goyte on their song “Somebody That I Used to Know” a few years back, but what you might not know is that she is a MASSIVE producer and writes and creates all of her own material. The ultimate female producer.
We Are KING – everything they’ve ever written but listen to “Hey”
This is literally one of the greatest groups ever to exist. If you love neo-soul and jazz, go and listen to everything. Almost exclusively self-produced.
Ester Dean – “Let Me Take You To Rio”
So yes, this is the theme song from the 2011 animated movie “Rio”, but it’s such a banger it’s been on my playlist constantly for the last 10 years. Ester Dean produces her own music, but is also extremely well known for writing and producing hits for Rihanna, Katy Perry, and many other artists and movies as well.
TOKiMONSTA – “Get Me Some feat. DrewLove, DumfoundDead”
TOKiMONSTA is a such a prolific producer and artist that it’s hard to pick a single song of hers. Her music ranges from electronic dance, to low-fi beats, and she’s collaborated with some of my favourite artists including Anderson Paak, Sunni Colón, and Gavin Turek.
Imogen Heap – “Goodnight and Go”
Imogen Heap is a British singer and producer, who is famous for creating Mi.Mu gloves, a wearable machine that essentially allows the performer to loop, add effects and produce on-the-spot in a live setting. She’s also created a platform called Mycelia, which aims to connect musicians in technical and ethical ways, so she’s a pretty cool artist in general. Her hit album, Speak for Yourself, came out when I was in highschool, so her music is quite nostalgic for me.
FKA Twigs – “Cellophane”
FKA Twigs is my idea of the ultimate artist – she not only produces, but writes, sings, dances, and is a truly multidisciplinary artist. Do not listen to this song without watching the breathtaking masterpiece of a music video she has created for it.
Bad Snacks – “Per La Luna”
This girl is one to watch. She produces, plays guitar and other stringed instruments, but I mostly know her from her awesome Instagram page, where she frequently posts snippets of songs she’s working on. She is one of many, MANY young female producers on Instagram and TikTok, showing just how many women are starting to break into the music production field.
SH3 – “Pay For You”
Of course I have to mention my friend, SH3, who is the best female producer I know personally! She writes for herself as well as being featured often on other artist’s tracks as a producer as well as singer. Lots of great songs to pick from, but “Pay For You” as my favourite, as she wrote this when we were in school for music production together.
Her Songs – “Goodbye”
This super talented group of female and non-binary artists from all over the world got together in my city, Toronto, to write, produce and record a gorgeous collection of songs together. “Goodbye” is a poetically beautiful and sad song that I played on repeat during my last major breakup.
Janelle Monae – “Django Jane”
Janelle Monae is a ridiculously talented woman. An actress, dancer, singer, writer and also producer, she co-produced most of the songs on her album, Dirty Computer. A literal ICON.
