Tribeca Festival Announces 2021 Immersive Lineup

By: Katrina Lat

After the cancellation of its 2020 event, the annual Tribeca Film Festival will be back on the streets (and theatres) of New York City from June 9 – 20.

To complement its in-person offering, the festival has announced Tribeca at Home, an online portal featuring screenings of festival selections. While the film festival organized the We Are One festival in conjunction with YouTube last spring, Tribeca at Home marks the event’s first foray into a digital attendance option.

Though this portal is available to audiences in the U.S. only, individuals outside of the States can still interact online through the Tribeca Festival Immersive Lineup. Throughout this line-up, various interactive events will harness the power of experiential storytelling and technology to create impactful immersive content.

Breonna’s Garden

Much of the immersive lineup will take the form of installations throughout NYC, but a select few will be available virtually as well. This includes the World Premiere of Un(re)solved, an examination into more than 150 cold case murders that date back to the civil rights era. The installation is also part of the festival’s Juneteeth programming, alongside other World Premiere experiences such as Breonna’s Garden, an AR experience created in collaboration with Ju’Niyah Palmer in honour of her sister, Breonna Taylor.

Other remote experiences on the immersive lineup includes VR storytelling through the Museum of Other Realities, which is accessible to Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest (with Oculus Link), HTC Vive, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality users. VR entries include POV: Points of View and The Changing Same: Episode 1, both also part of the Juneteeth lineup.

While it’s nice to finally see a festival return to an in-person event this year, it will be interesting to see how Tribeca’s learnings from its past digital programming enables a whole new audience to take part from the comfort of their home.
