Year in Review: The Best Songs of 2016

Amrit Sandhu

Song: “Come And See Me (feat. Drake)
Artist: PartyNextDoor
Album: PartyNextDoor 3
Label: OVO
Released: March 23

Mississauga native PartyNextDoor blew up this year with his hit song “Come And See Me” that featured Drake.

As someone told me recently about this song “it reminds you of trying to make a relationship work but there’s some distance.” This slow jam is definitely one of those that you just keep playing over and over again, while both PartyNextDoor and Drake’s voice makes you swoon.

Song: “I Am A Nightmare ”
Artist: Brand New
Album: Leaked Demos 2006
Label: Procrastinate! Music Traitors
Released: May 17

Brand New has been quiet since their last album came out back in 2009, but they released one heck of a song in “I Am A Nightmare” back in May.

What was originally an “upcoming release” for their new album, which currently every fan is waiting for, has now hooked every Brand New fan at the edge of their seat. It is one of the best tracks to come out this year, with a mix of raw dedication and just pure talent. To hit home why this is one of my favourite songs of the year, Brand New debuted this song in Canada for the first time anywhere during their Canadian tour.

Song: “Black Beatles (feat. Gucci Mane)”
Artist: Rae Sremmurd
Album: SremmLife 2
Label: Interscope
Released: August 12

Rae Sremmurd’s hit “Black Beatles” has been everywhere and once it’s in your head it just doesn’t leave.

Rae Sremmurd has done the impossible and got a party anthem that everyone is singing, including me and that is hard to do.

Not only is it catchy but thanks to #MannequinChallenge, this song has been everywhere, from celebrities to your family parties to the local Starbucks.

It has to be the one song that I am not sick of this year after repeating it and singing it while at work with my co-workers. Once in your head though, you won’t stop singing along.

Song: “I Hate You, I Love You (feat. Olivia O’Brien)”
Artist: Gnash
Album: Us
Label: Atlantic
Released: February 17

Gash had a hit on his hands back in February with “I Hate You, I Love You” because not only does it invoke emotions that no one wants to feel, but it grips your soul and sends shivers down your spine for anyone starting out in a new relationship or just have left one.

Olivia O’Brien’s voice brings this song together and reminds you that love is just as fickle as anything. This is one of those songs that you are going to play when there’s a storm outside and you need a song for those cold nights. Hook, line and sinker, this track will linger in your mind for days.

Song: “Bored To Death”
Artist: Blink 182
Album: California
Label: BMG
Released: April 27

Blink 182 are back and without Tom, yes that’s right.

Everyone thought Blink 182 would be done without Tom but this song proves everything wrong. Matt Skiba (from Alkaline Trio), fits into this band as well and this song is a testament to the staying power of Blink 182. Not only is this catchy and has the same catchiness as other Blink songs but there is new life in this song and has a more melodic feel to it. It soon became one of my favourite Blink 182 songs and it helps that the music video is just as awesome as the song.
