Year in Review: The Best Songs of 2016

Callie Craig

Song: “Solo”
Artist: Frank Ocean
Album: Blond
Label: Superball Music
Released: August 20

Frank Ocean left the world in suspense for his latest release, Blond. The standout track on the album is “Solo”. Its unbelievably crisp lyrics mixed with the soothing, catchy beats is the epitome of Frank Ocean.

Song: “22 (Over Soon)”
Artist: Bon Iver
Album: 22, A Million

Label: Jagjaguwar
Released: September 20

Being the first track on 22, A Million, this song sets the tone and the beats for the rest of the album. From the deep saxophone solos to the incredibly delicate harmonies, everything about this song will stir your emotions.

Song: “Blessings (Feat. Ty Dolla Sign, Anderson .Paak, Raury, BJ the Chicago Kid)”
Artist: Chance The Rapper
Album: Colouring Book
Label: N/A
Released: May 12

Chance the Rapper, and an impressive list of features, manages to wrap up his third mixtape, Coloring Book, with this smooth track. With “Blessings”, he manages to turn down the speed, lighten the bass, but leaves you wanting to hit repeat.

Song: “Freedom (feat. Kendrick Lamar)”
Artist: Beyonce
Album: Lemonade
Label: Parkwood/Columbia

Released: April 23

Beyonce’s sixth studio album, Lemonade, was an absolute knock-out. Each track oozes raw talent and grit that we see over and over with this artist. However, the song Freedom featuring Kendrick Lamar is so strikingly poignant the vocals, bass, and lyrics will send shivers down your spine.

Song: “Ultralight Beam (Feat. Chance The Rapper, Kirk Franklin, Kelly Price, The-Dream)”
Artist: Kanye West
Album: The Life of Pablo
Label: GOOD Music
Released: February 14

The gospel fueled track introduces Kanye’s seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo. It speaks for itself; the sharp lyrics throughout empowered by the bluesy choir give this track its earned spot in my top five songs of 2016.
