Being a HUGE Gn’R fan growing up, I had to seize the opportunity to shoot Duff with his new band Walking Papers. To get that close and capture him doing his thing was awesome. He totally oozes Rock N’ Roll.

As a scrawny teenager back in 1991, I attended my first concert in Toronto. Knowing what my friends and I were getting into when we bought tickets to see GWAR, we were still shocked and amazed at what we saw. Full heavy metal moshing, wicked costumes, a human meat grinder and a lot of blood (fake of course), which all made for an unforgettable evening. It was also interesting trying to explain to mom why my clothes were covered in blood. Skip to 2013 and I got to capture Oderus Urungus in all his glory.

One of the rules of photographing a live performance is “Expect the Unexpected”. That held true when shooting the side stage at UpRoar Festival this summer. As New Politics lead singer David Boyd was dancing around the stage he looked towards the crowd as if to say “hey watch this”, and out of nowhere did two back flips, a head stand and several leaps. Just goes to show; always keep you finger on the trigger.

A rainy and chilly night can sometimes take the fun out of photographing outdoors, but it was well worth it to capture this expression.

When shooting bands there are a lot of elements to contend with (ie: lighting, crowded photo pit, un-enthusiastic bands), but the goal is to fight through it and look for that special moment that tells a story, even if it takes getting kicked in the back of the head by a crowd surfer as security is pulling them down from the crowd.
