Besides great sound at a concert, an important part of a performance is stage presence.  This photo captures your attention immediately because it’s an action shot.  The lens was fast enough to capture the moment, and you can really tell what a great performer Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist was that night.  He’s known for his live performances, and photos like this really engages the audience, making you feel like you were at the show.

What I love about this photo of Janelle Monae is that it doesn’t look like it’s from a concert at all.  It’s got a very studio feel, the lighting is so bright, and she looks absolutely flawless.  The colours of the photo are so inviting and unlike the usual blue and magenta that you see at concerts.

I’m pretty sure most people who attended the 20th Anniversary Wu-Tang Clan reunion at Kool Haus that night would agree that Method Man was the most entertaining and energetic of the bunch.  What I love about this photo is that you can tell that he was completely immersed in the moment and was putting in 100% to put on a show for the audience.

It’s hard not to include at least one GWAR photo in this section.  Because of the theatrics of their performance, I really can’t imagine there being a bad photo of the band.  This one in particularly great because of the fog and lighting, making the concert feel even more surreal than it probably already was.

The Dakota Tavern is a fantastic place for catching bands, and one of the most charming aspects of this basement bar is how intimate the venue is.  This photo really brings that out, as you feel like you are on the same level as Leah Fay (pictured), like she is performing right beside you.  Also, the shallow depth of field in the photo helped with not distracting the audience with what’s happening in the background, but still gives you the living-room feel that the Dakota is known for.
